The Panel Upgrade Question: When You Actually Need One

Sometimes the upgrade is real. Often it’s the most profitable sentence in the trade. Here’s how to tell which conversation you’re in — before anyone quotes you.

"You'll probably need a panel upgrade" might be the most profitable sentence in residential electrical work — which is exactly why you should be suspicious of it when it arrives early, confidently, and without measurement. Sometimes it's true. Often it isn't. Here's how to tell which conversation you're in.

What your panel actually is

The panel is your home's connection point to utility power, rated by its main breaker — commonly 100, 150, or 200 amps. That rating is the ceiling on how much your home can draw at once. Most homes built in recent decades carry 150 or 200 amps; older homes often carry 100 or less. The question "do I need an upgrade?" is really asking: does my ceiling have room for what I want to add? — and that's arithmetic, not opinion.

When the answer is genuinely yes

  • The math says so. A proper load calculation (the same discipline we apply to generator sizing) shows your existing loads plus the addition exceeding what your service can safely carry. This is the only version of "yes" that should cost you money — and it comes with the calculation shown to you.
  • The panel itself is the problem. Certain legacy panel brands have documented failure histories; heat damage, corrosion, or double-tapped breakers found during inspection are physical facts, not sales talk. A panel can need replacement at any amperage.
  • You're stacking major additions. Pool plus EV plus an addition plus electric appliance conversions — growth plans can legitimately outrun a 150-amp service. Upgrading once, ahead of the sequence, beats upgrading twice.

When the answer is "probably not" — and what's used instead

The most common trigger for the upgrade conversation today is an EV charger — a 7,000–11,500 watt appliance landing in a garage. Here's what a lazy quote skips: load management. A managing device watches your panel's total draw and throttles or pauses charging when the home needs capacity, letting many 100–150 amp homes add Level 2 charging with no panel work at all. The car charges overnight while the house sleeps; nobody notices the pauses. For the right home, that's four figures saved — and it's a solved, code-recognized approach, not a workaround.

Similar logic applies elsewhere: circuit-level solutions, smarter appliance scheduling, or simply discovering — via the calculation — that your "full" panel has more real headroom than its crowded breaker rows suggest. Crowded is not the same as loaded.

The five-minute self-check before anyone visits

  • Open the panel door (touch nothing but the door) and read the main breaker number — that's your service size.
  • Count what runs on electricity: A/C units, water heater, range, dryer, pool, well pump, existing EV.
  • Note the panel's age and condition — rust, heat marks, and tandem breakers everywhere are worth mentioning.
  • Write down what you're adding and why.

Bring that to any assessment — ours or anyone's — and you've made a guessing-based quote much harder to deliver.

The honest-broker test: a trustworthy answer to the panel question includes the load calculation, considers load management where it applies, and is willing to conclude "you don't need one yet." If every path leads to the most expensive option, get a second opinion — we're happy to be it.
